Ode to theTaos Highway~Writing 201 Day 5

Up From the Valley
Up From the Valley

The rushing Rio Grande on her way to her mother the sea

Peaceful souls abiding in their birdhouse villages in tranquility

Heavenly scented cotton balls of sagebrush line the way

Pinon vanguards carry the jewels of the desert each day

Aromas from the Kivas are an invitation to sit and rest

To see the two strand necklace of a double rainbow is best

Arriving at the Mecca within the most ancient Pueblo’s home

Hearing the heartbeat of the Natives in their rhythmic drums

Crying out the holiest of chants as they whirl and dance

Calling the Ancestors to guide them and help them advance

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. remember the chalupas? the ristras? let’s not forget about the taos hum, or taos pueblo, or the pueblo dances and pow-wows, or me taking a whiz off the rio grande gorge bridge. most of all, it was where Jason was born, where you were conceived (n.m.). ;-D
