De-light-

Full is the night with

                                               The moon

Shining bright up-

On the hill

A-

Ware are we

Of the Un

Filtered gaze of

That wise old

Man a-

Midst the stars

Building a

Scaf-

Folding right to

The heavens of

Divine

Love

Today at The Bar, I want us to get enamored with enjambment.

Pronounced: (en-JAM-ment)

Officially, (according to poetryarchive.org):
“Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence or clause over a line-break. If a poet allows all the sentences of a poem to end in the same place as regular line-
breaks, a kind of deadening can happen in the ear, and in the brain too, as all the thoughts can end up being the same length.”

Simply put, enjambment occurs when a phrase carries over a line-break without a major pause. In French, the word means “straddling.” Imagine a word or phrase straddling across the lines or spacing of the poem. Perfect, right? When you read an enjambed line, it encourages you to keep reading without stopping for a breather, as it were.

Particularly with traditional poems, each line was usually its own thought, and rhymes were often predictable and rhythmic (end-stopped).” De Jackson

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. Carol, this is just a wonderful example. I love what you did with spacing, right and left justified.
    Oh! THIS:
“Shining bright up” — “up” becomes a noun here, something to be shined into your life.
I’m also deeply enamored of what you’ve done with:
    “Scaf-
    Folding”

Excellent! Thank you so much for jambin’ with us!
