The Axis~Quatern

River
River

Around the river all life flows

To the water everyone goes

For fishing, playing cleaning too

In villages this is the view

~

Women on a rock beating clothes

Around the river all life flows

Men fishing for today’s good bread

Children playing far from their bed

~

Feeling joyous release from cares

Their day’s actions are truly prayers

Around the river all life flows

The feeling of lack no one knows

~

The ways of old are prevalent

Ancient wisdom is dominant

Perspectives change when rhythm slows

Around the river all life flows

The River

Published by: writersdream9

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. I really like this one, Carol. So true that much of life, in days of old, took place around the river. Fishing, washing clothes, bathing, etc. We have come such a long way. The river is a timeless entity, gives SO much to every generation.

  2. How beautiful the flow of this poem with its perfect refrain “around the river all life flows.” And the images are vivid and the picture even, a symbols of cleansing and unity and community. The rhyme seals all into a wonderful experience for me (and another reason to keep rivers clean and flowing).

  3. I like the sequencing of the line “around the river all life flows” from 1st to 4th line in each stanza. the photo reminds me of how women in the third world have to work in and around water, spending hours to carry necessary water for cooking, hygiene, etc. – well done!

  4. A very evocative poem, Carol, taking the reader back to archetypal images and memories, back to simpler times where living on the shores of a river ensured a human connection with Mother Nature and with what she provides.
