First Taste

First Taste George Hodan
George Hodan

His one year old eyes widened

The birthday cake just for him

Many colored gum drops all around

His horizons had now been broadened

~

His first taste of those white crystals

Blue eyes closed with serene bliss

Coos escaped his seemingly deprived lips

If he could, he would have whistled

~

Two minutes later his faced covered

Icinged crumbs smeared everywhere

Promptly closed his eyes and fell asleep

Mama promptly put the sugar in the cupboard

“Every year, during NaNoWriMo, I talk about the importance of eating for character development. Then I try to do a variation on what is basically: ‘Describe a scene where…’. So, let me talk a minute on the subject. It is not easy to show a character’s personality without a string of adjectives. The easiest way is through actions and interactions. One of the best of these is a scene where the character is eating, either alone, or with someone, or at a party. Think about it a moment. Think of different meals and what someone might learn about you were they to watch your approach to eating. Think of other people you know and how they eat and what you learn. Heck, go sit at a coffeehouse and watch people. What judgments do you make based on how they eat and drink?”

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. as a recovering food addict, I remember at six or so drinking mom’s Karo corn syrup straight out of the bottle. I was in heaven!! Since then I’ve heard alcoholics say their how as kids their first hit of booze was like nirvana, paradise!! Oh, well.
