Remains

If my body goes on but

my soul is corrupt,

Have I truly survived?

If I gain all the wealth but

I can’t see my fellow humans

Have I truly survived?

If I gain all the prestige but

no one knows the real me

Have I truly survived?

If I have many people around but

I don’t know love

Have I truly survived?

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. This is wonderful. It reminds me of Corinthians 13 4-7 even though it’s about survival. Though here you ask questions rather than make statements also I think it’s the rhythm of the piece that calls those verses to mind; I sang a setting of those verses in a hymn that matches your poem’s rhythm, where in the rising and falling music lines made those declarative verses sound like questions. I believe we can’t survive without love. So yet another mental connection. It’s a great poem with an important message.

  2. whether it’s in this world, or the next, sooner or later, one will get down to what is real, what is truly important. a beautiful set up of contrasting ideas between unreal and real, and a very intriguing photo.
