Moored

Waiting by Patrick Jennings
Waiting by Patrick Jennings

First light dawns and floats

Small weathered boats

The lake looks to be stagnating

Simply waiting

“Are there enough fish in this murk?”

To work

Fishermen begin to smirk

This is a fishing town for sure

The water should not be pure

Small weathered boats simply waiting to work

For two prompts:

Dverse Poets Badge

Unraveling the Ovillejo (a new poetic form rolls up to the Bar)

Prompt offered by De Jackson:

“The explanation below is offered from several online sources, which seem to be attributed most often to Rhina P. Espaillat:

…the “ovillejo,” an old Spanish verse form that means “tight little bundle.” “-ejo” is one of our blessed diminutives, and “ovillo” means “tangled ball of yarn.” The last line is a “redondilla,” a “little round” that collects all three of the short lines. The rhyme scheme is established, but the meter is at the poet’s discretion, although in Spanish the longer lines tend to be octosyllabic (8 syllables).”

Thanks to everyone for two great prompts!

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. I’ve seen photos of various fishing boats, nevermind passenger busses, around the word that have these personal decorations, sometimes even garishly painted. this tells me the local folks take real personal pride and ownership. the waters in some of these 3rd world areas I wouldn’t even want to pi$$ in, sad to say. one day i’ll get to understand all these fancy schmancy poem formats. “Gimme that ol’ time iambic pentameter, gimme that ol’ time iambic pentameter, gimme that ol’ time iambic pentameter, it’s good enough for me….”

    1. Thanks, Susan. I still haven’t done that other great award you nominated me for. I just haven’t been able to. Please know that it’s not due to not appreciating the thought. Thanks again!
