The storm had hit with an energy that even those familiar with the coastal town had never seen. It was storm Fredrick and it had hit in the middle of the night. No one was prepared and the meteorologists had not foreseen it.
.
The reporter, after being yelled at by her editor, had raced out to the beach to see the extent of the damage and of course, report it. Her photographer was all set up to shoot but froze completely. She snapped saying, “What ARE you waiting for?” Everyone was under pressure. His face was bleached white which made her turn to look where his camera was pointed. At first, she could not tell what he was so upset about. Then it hit her. There was n0 one in the town. Not a soul and not a sound.
.
“What kind of storm was this?”, they said in unison.

Thank you. I finish and then I feel very unsure. I guess because the art of storytelling is so new to me. I’m grateful for your blog challenges.

what a great little story. the town reminds me of a Scottish town along the irish sea. definitely a mystery. where did everybody go? how did they go? etc. etc.

intriguing indeed…the kind of story one thinks about long after it has been read. good 🙂

Thank you. Very nervous about fiction. 🙂

oh, don’t be! you write very well, and fiction won’t be a problem for you…I have written very little fiction myself, but I enjoyed it very much. 🙂

yes, I took the Writing 101 Fiction course last spring, and really loved it. It is fun. I should find a blogger “Event” for short fiction…any suggestions?

I don’t know of any but I am looking too. If we hear let’s tell each other.

yes, I will like that. I know of some poetry and photo sites but no fiction yet. There is a class soon but it is already filled. I think The Daily Post has fiction writers. 🙂

I have a substantial effort in a novel that I have been working on for years…more than one novel, in fact. But it is not going anywhere at all outside of my notebooks and/or printer pages. I like blogging because it is fast and short…

I really get that! I’m not sure I have a novel in me. I like to come to a conclusion.

right…I may see about going for shorter fiction…I have four examples, some have been around for like 30 years.

they mostly are not in my computers, although I do have hard copies which I could enter in. The one I am thinking of is one I did for NaNoWriMo a couple of years ago…didn’t complete it. Chatting with you always gives me good ideas … 🙂

I am the opposite when writing. (not talking :/) I tend to need to flesh out my ideas.

I tend to get tongue-tied if I’m talking outloud, forget what I’m saying, lose thought trains, etc. but that isn’t the case when I’m writing, especially on paper with pencil, when I can edit as I go. (I try to do that “editing” as I speak, which is one of my problems.)

I have always loved linguistics, and I love writing poetry because it involves word skills even more than prose writing.

once I was taking a ffinal exam for a French-reading profficiency (f key is stuck) I got a C because the prof said my translations were beautiful…but I tried to hard to use precisely the right words, wasting time on volume. I do that anyway, but writing in English I can work around awkward useage.

I would love to have that problem. For me part of the problem is I’m a hunter/pecker and that slows me down tremendously.

I learned typing back in the dark ages, also shorthand, which was one of the most helpful things I ever learned. Also Latin (one year.) I do hunt and peck with my stylus on my Kindle Fire, which is not really efficient as it results in a lot of errors.

don’t forget the high school beginner class took an entire semester or two to get a typist up to speed. I still picture that big book with the examples…. ded ded ded jkl; asdf asdf …. etc. I never have learned to type numbers or special characters without looking at the keyboard.

My mom was an executive secretary and she could type over 120 words a minute. She was a whiz. She told me that I would regret not learning! Ahh!

wow! I never got over about 80 wpm, and whenever I took a speed test I failed it…I am a very poor test-taker. 🙂 I am really glad I learned when I did, though…and insisted that all my kids take typing in school, and they all appreciate it now.
