Sweaty and tired, I climbed into the tent. The battle that day had been intense but at least, no one took a hit. The sleeping bag was very stinky. I remember that because at that moment I had comforted myself with the knowledge that our odors would all run together. Funny what we think about at those times. My buddy bounded in almost knocking the tent over and began to lick my face ferociously. He had been with us all day but the excitement to see me never waned. What would I have done without him these years? I had been working diligently to take him home with me when we go back. I got the news today that after quarantine, he will be allowed to make the journey home.

I feel the joy this soldier feels that he gets to take his dog back home with him. Wonderful story, Carol. I am always happy to see dogs being sent to the states to be with the soldiers that befriended them in the war. Lucky dogs and lucky soldiers!

Me too. They should not have to leave their new friends. Thank you, Joy for your wonderful prompts!

Yes, the story lines between us were similar. I like the way you described the odors and the grueling day. Having his dog comfort him and bring him calm showcases how much an animal can soothe a weary soul.
Your story has a happy ending too. Who doesn’t love a happy ending. : )
It’s very nice to meet you Carol.

Very nice. Reminds me of the news story of the person (don’t remember who, now) that worked to bring dogs back stateside for military.

great short story!! it’s so striking the contrast between an animal and his handler. and yet that is used in one of man’s most destructive activities, war.

sometimes these bears are hounded by humans who want to get up real close and photograph them. and there are the stories of humans who get eaten by them. remember “mr. chocolate”?
to try again…………..
