Facade~Flash Fiction

Cries of agony issued from their once quiet village. The little girl added her tears to the growing melee. “Mommy?”, she whispered between cries. Reaching out her arms, she searched for the familiar touch of her mother. There was no familiar cotton dress. The scent of her was not there. Turning to her right, she felt nothing but dirt and rubble. Brother was not next to her as he had been just moments before. In that moment of great fear, her tears abandoned her. Silence within took over and she let go of all she had ever known. There was no other choice.

Outside of the photoshop that they had been visiting, destruction was everywhere. The bombs had razed the small town. Sounds of bombs echoed through the square and in the ears of its peoples. Nothing but the physical manifestation of the entire imbalance of all of mankind.

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. Very poignant! The last line, “Nothing but the physical manifestation of the entire imbalance of all of mankind,” grabbed me right in the heart! Such a sad and tragic thing in today’s world. When will it ever stop? Wonderful story, Carol!

  2. so sad. that photo could have been anywhere in the 3rd world where violence by terrorist bombs are all too common. with the attacks in Brussels it brings home the point no place is safe.
