From Chevrefeuille:
Yugen is usually defined as “mystery” and “unknowable depth“. Somehow Yugen has avoided the controversy of Wabi and Sabi. But since deciding which haiku exemplifies this quality is a judgmental decision, there is rarely consent over which verse has it and which does not. One could say a woman’s face half-hidden behind a fan has Yugen. The same face half-covered with pink goo while getting a facial, however, does not. But still, haiku poets do use the atmosphere as defined by Yugen to make their words be a good haiku by forcing their readers to think and to delve into the everyday sacredness of common things.
Here is an example of a “yugen-haiku” by Basho:

Don’t you love the idea of emptiness dropping down? ❤

aww why’s he hiding from us? Grasshoppers are so cool looking. They are so green they almost seem to glow in the sunlight!

sound is, within physics anyways, largely empty. sound may be fury but in spiritual terms it is devoid of power the wuff puff of blustery bully’wind. A drum is but air yet how it moves colors. but take away the unseen air and we’ve the black of truly empty space…which of course isn’t really empty and thus clean but still dirty…very dirty… for if it weren’t we’d no radiations to come alive. emptiness is also akin to peace/loneliness, thus as a dug bug ‘s shell fall and the rain drums the ground, both sounds and quite a lot of them for the contrasted sake but soft ones as if only a feeling decends as if falling from above – without warning.. however as most know feelings, i’d mention this “emptiness raining down” is very much something. .. further yu gen if pronounced you gen as in generation.. oo lala! eugen as in eugenol the anesttethic substance of mainly clove but also pink pepper, and alspice but not limited to these spices… numbs…funny you’d mention empty.

I finally have found some time to catch up commenting. What a nice haiku you have created in the response on this beautiful haiku writing technique used by Basho.
