That Morning

Death came slowly and ever so quietly to her. It settled on her like the fog settles on a rolling hill at dawn. She looked out her window and saw death’s fog creeping towards her room. In the distance, there was a tall dead tree that was signaling her fate. That tree was extending its dried arms to the sky as if the sun and rain could still nourish it. There was still a spirit in that sentinel even if only in the contribution that its demise makes to the earth. She felt a connection to all life even as her body was releasing its hold on this existence. More than this vessel that had carried her for so long, more than all her life’s experiences both painful and joy filled, and so much more than the mistakes she made, yes she was so much more.

The feeling began to leave her feet first. It was a very strange feeling. As if her soul was starting its journey home closest to the earth that it was leaving. an earth that had sustained her and given her so many moments of merriment and peace. The numbness was spreading now more quickly than before and she could tell that her breathing was slowing. It was interesting that her small family were out living their lives. Oh God, how she would miss them. That was the most heart-wrenching feeling of all. The loss of her loves. Would she still see them? Prayers went out that she would be a source of guidance for them from her new home.

Yes, it was time now. Her mind filled with the memorized Words of love. Her favorite song filled her heart and she could hear it as life slipped away. Her soul soared.

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.
