Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too was a gift.~Mary Oliver
Muttering to myself about how these things always seem to happen to me, I approached the lake with thoughts of jumping. My life had been filled with trials and heartache and I grew weary. It was dawn, and I love the sunrise. It fortifies me but not that day. I barely noticed the pink fiery sky. Pain blinds a person.
I went to my favorite spot, closed my eyes and sighed deeply. The sounds of the birds, the gentle swoosh as the water hit the shore and the slowly appearing sun all worked their magic to give me a glimmer of peace. I would be alright. I was strong and capable and I not only survive, I thrive. The darkness always drives me to the light.
the darkness of night
tadpoles and crickets cry
the sun brings peace

Disaster averted for the time being, let’s hope in future too. You describe the blindness of despair so well.

I feel the same as your poem expresses. Darkness so often is the driving force in a person’s journey to the light….we don’t recognize it at the time, as all is darkness, but in retrospect we see it all as part of the journey!

I have a feeling we even need the darkness to notice the light.. Love the image of the dawn at the lake.

You’ve described such a lovely, peaceful time that it’s easy to imagine the spirit would be uplifted and inspired to survive. Your haiku reinforces the mood.

wonderful and very powerful story, very powerful poem also. we often think we want to die, but how often do we go to those places that bring us pleasure, even peace, during times of pain.

Darkness can trigger off a reaction to motivate one towards better things. It averted a near tragedy in this case! Very forthright write Carol!
