Haibun Monday at the Pub

Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too was a gift.~Mary Oliver

Muttering to myself about how these things always seem to happen to me, I approached the lake with thoughts of jumping. My life had been filled with trials and heartache and I grew weary. It was dawn, and I love the sunrise. It fortifies me but not that day. I barely noticed the pink fiery sky. Pain blinds a person.

I went to my favorite spot, closed my eyes and sighed deeply. The sounds of the birds, the gentle swoosh as the water hit the shore and the slowly appearing sun all worked their magic to give me a glimmer of peace. I would be alright. I was strong and capable and I not only survive, I thrive. The darkness always drives me to the light.

the darkness of night

tadpoles and crickets cry

the sun brings peace

Haibun Monday #7

I have been writing all my life but for the most part, it has been a secret. My parents did not believe writing was a good way to earn money so I hid my poems. Then one day, I wanted to comment on an essay that a friend had written and found myself with a blog. That quiet whisper inside said, "You can write your poetry and no one will ever know.". I knew nothing of followers and the like at that time. So, here I am trying to learn my craft and enjoying every moment of it. My personal details are, I'm 57, married for 39 years, have one grown son who is God's gift to us and last but not least at all, I'm a Baha'i which basically means that I love all humanity.

  1. I feel the same as your poem expresses. Darkness so often is the driving force in a person’s journey to the light….we don’t recognize it at the time, as all is darkness, but in retrospect we see it all as part of the journey!

  2. I am happy that she felt peace and calm in the end ~ This line struck me: The darkness always drives me to the light.

Thanks for the inspiring share Carol and wishing you a happy week ~

  3. wonderful and very powerful story, very powerful poem also. we often think we want to die, but how often do we go to those places that bring us pleasure, even peace, during times of pain.
